My name is Aimee and I would like to tell
everyone my story about my experiences with
Heaven Sent Paws(HSP). My two year old
daughter, Hailey and I were all set to get a
service dog from HSP in the July of 08 class. I
first applied for a service dog through HSP in
August of 07 on the night of Hailey's second
birthday when I witnessed her first non
responsive low. Words can not describe the way
I felt when I walked into my daughter's room and
saw her that way. I felt so helpless watching my
daughter's body shut down; it was a horrifying
experience. I had to force her mouth open and
squirt apple juice down her throat with a syringe
to get her blood sugar to come up enough to
give her a sugar tablet. As soon as Hailey went
back to sleep, I sent in my application to HSP, vowing that I would do everything within my power not to see
Hailey like this again.

On Monday, someone with HSP called us and told us that Hailey was accepted into the program. I was
filled with joy and was so excited that there was something out there that could help Hailey. Immediately, I
began fund raising for HSP in Hailey's name, and we ended up raising $12,000 for the company. With the
fund raising under our belts, Hailey and I began impatiently counting down the days until July. Hailey and I
were in an unique situation, because my sister was also getting a service dog from HSP during the
February class. When she finally got back with her service dog, Hailey and I took the first opportunity to
meet the dog. We couldn't wait to see how the dog was helping my sister.

When I saw the dog, I was shocked. The dog did not have any of the characteristics of anything I know is
vital for a service dog. It growled fiercely at my husband and visitors in my home, it refused to go through
doorways, and I watched as my sister literally had to drag him through the door to get him into a restaurant.
My sister was firm with the dog, and had the situation well under control, but the dog was simply refusing to
follow her commands. This is unacceptable for service dogs, because they MUST perform the tasks
expected of them since they will be in public places. This was my first red flag that perhaps HSP was not for
us.
